note two "portes" in the closest-to-the-beach (and also among the most
gumshoe-like) chapters of GR: the porte-cochere where Slothrop's tail
is hiding (this is the only point where one of the tails is shown in
person), and La Porte Fausse, or the False Gate in Nice where Slothrop
enters the world of the preterite.
