IVIV some very spoiler-ish reader response/cultural context for Doc: Philip Marlowe

Full disclosure: I agree with Laura. I always thought GI was dumb.  Unlike some stuff i never watched, i still would not.  Would watch Scooby-Doo before that if forced, maybe. At least I could talk to my daughter about Scooby-Doo which she continued to watch despite her dad's gentle disdain. 

I'm nowhere near as interesting as Pynchon. High culture overextender. Or
pretender. That's me. 

However, just sayin': the GI notion is a take-off from one of the ideaa that the discovery of the new world gave Shakespeare. Or, the shipwreck that was the inspiratin for The Tempest lead, three and a half centuries later, to Gilligan's Island. 

And many dull academics, who are too stupid to bore us with supposed Pynchon exegeses, have written about Gilligan's Island and The Tempest and the Whole New World motif. Or so a pop cuture expert friend of mine has told me.
