As far as the Dude abiding goes, "abide" is, of course, a very biblical kind
of word http://bibletab.com/a/abide.htm , but I always think of Lillian
Gish's couple of narrative moments in Charles Laughton's only directorial
effort, the very beautiful "The Night of the Hunter." 

Gish's grandmotherly character says, "You know, when you're little, you have
more endurance than God is ever to grant you again. Children are man at his
strongest. They abide." and subsequently, "They abide, and they endure."
A-and aren't Zoyd and the Dude fundamentally children?  They are very much
about their abodes, and they do endure.
