Inherent Vice is a marvelous parody/pastiche. If that's not enough,  
read something else. There's plenty in IV that makes me think of the  
guy that wrote Gravity's Rainbow and what life must have been like for  
him in Manhattan Beach while writing that loose, baggy, hallucinogenic  
masterpiece. There's also plenty in there that makes me think of [and  
forces me to re-read] Raymond Chandler.

If that's not enough for others, fuck 'em.
