"Can't Buy Me Love"
This well-known Beatles hit has a curious connection with two other
Beatles tunes touched on inThe Crying of Lot 49. "She Loves You" is
cited outright and there is the parody title "I Want to Kiss Your
Feet" in reference to "I Want to Hold Your Hand" by Slick Dick and the
Volkswagens (Volkswagens are commonly referred to as Beetles)

My post at the IVwiki got edited [ah well] so the following was
removed. Both "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "She Loves You" were re-
recorded at the same session as "Can't Buy Me Love", but this time in
German, the only time the Beatles re-recorded a song for "Foreign"
markets. Considering Volkswagens, Dr Hilarius, Operation Paperclip
[the CIA program where ex-Nazis were 'de-commissioned' and folded into
the CIA's American projects like MKULTRA and "Corona"] this makes for
an early connection of Inherent Vice to The Crying of Lot 49. There
are many echos of CoL49 in IV.
