the best take on it that I've seen is in Be Kind, Rewind...
where, I think it's Jane Curtin, explains that they can make all the
movies they want but they have to make up their own plots.
"Or we'll send you to jail for a million billion years. - And people think
we're the bad guys!"
If somebody patents "boy meets girl" I'll be all for civil disobedience,
(and even now you can definitely make a case for "free samples build demand")
I also like Tolkien's words on the authorized edition of LOtR:
"those who approve of courtesy, at least, to living authors, will
buy this edition" (or something like that)
I admit I read the Salinger "un- and underpublished" archive online
but have made some amends by buying some Salinger...
or wait...did I actually get around to that or am I still just about to do it
sometime soon...
