Katje is worth thinking about, thx. Doc's past helping the cops still  
doesn't sit right with me, since I learned it from Pynchon in the book  
trailer video.  Knowing that going in to Chapter 1, remembering what I  
know of the '60s when I was in high school (I didn't get to Berkeley  
until 1972), if you knew something like that about somebody, back in  
the day, he wouldn't seem so hip.  In circles known to me personally,  
circa 1970 in Austin and San Marcos, Texas, a guy with that kind of  
past police affiliation would be suspect, no matter how hip he looked  
or how much dope he smoked - but that wasn't LA, maybe things were  
different out there that year.  Still, I'm interested in the close  
reading of Doc that will evolve here as the discussion continues, I  
had fun with him as I was reading the book.
