Sure, it's for amusement, but it's funny because you  know it's wrong
while sort of making fun of pedantry.  And, again, todays' standards
have outlawed the word stewardess in favor of the unisexual "flight
attendant," so Pynchon is flaunting the sexism of the day much as the
show Mad Men does for the early 60's (late 50's?).
