IVIV (1) In Doc's Office ...

These are beautiful typewriters. Unlike the various car makes, junk
food names and song titles of IV, I wouldn't expect yr average
non-Pynchon-fan reader to get anything from him being so specific
here. It wouldn't surprise me if this mention was just a personal
touch on his part.

Although it's only due to IV that I realised why my Olivetti (a
Valentine, not 22) just has a blank key where the '1' should be. I
always thought the number had worn off. Seems like it would be
significant for a writer so fascinated with 1s and 0s.
