Childhood's End and Free Four--right up yr alley, death-haunted alice

(speaking of have u ever read Ondaatje's Coming Through Slaughter--a
great little book about in part a death-haunted jazz musician in New
Orleans at turn of 20th Century--to quote:

'There are blues, there are the hymns, there is rhythm, there is free
jazz, there is melody, soul, mood, wild aggression with notes flung
out in pain and hurt and it all creates an atmosphere, an environment.
New Orleans whores pimps drugs booze clarinets and cornets jazz and
jazzmen ship building and photographers and love and lunacy.'--can u
ask for more?
