Thomas Pynchon is on great form in Inherent Vice (Jonathan
Cape), a phantasmagorical, typically paranoid, take on the
private eye genre. More hare-brained than hard-boiled, it plays
a game of cherchez la femme among Californian surfers as the
idealism of the 1960s gives way to the cynical 1970s.
