Mark - agreed on family being important in P's books, and he gives it
a nuanced treatment. He writes about Mothers and Fathers in GR in a
way that I thought he might have been backing away from a bit in VL,
but families are a mess in IV, too.
But, IF -- just riffin', not sure I really believe this always -- for
example the Golden Fang is supposed to stand for "capitalism" then it
would be money and the necessity of working as a wage slave that is
the "heroin" that we're all strung out on, not China White.
Speaking of opiates, saw an interesting book in the Pegasus bookstore
in Berkeley the other day: Opium for the Masses: Harvesting Nature's
Pain Medication by Jim Hogshire. Easy to grow, harvest, and use the
poppy, he writes.
I wonder why they don't just turn Afghanistan into the world's
provider of opium for medical use, just divert the output from the
warlords to Big Pharma, solving many problems with a single stone, so
to speakā¦.
