Ian:

"How can I feel bad just because I expect things to get worse."

____________________________________________________

Suppose you have a dental appointment, and you expect you will need two root
canals? I cannot say it would make *you* feel bad, but I would not
anticipate great joy. On the other hand, you are right: a pessimist's
expectations do not necessarily entail abandoning hope.

Joe:

"You don't necessarily feel bad about it. You're just prepared."
________________________________________________

Point well taken. You don't necessarily feel bad ahead of time, but I think
that in some situations most people would (dental example above).

Together, you have convinced me that my initial position would require fine
tuning. You brought to mind one of my ethics professors who is deeply
pessimistic, but quite cheerful about it.
