Having read The Looming Tower, I'm surprised that Wright had anything
to do with The Siege. Maybe, a la The Player, he wrote an early draft
that was transmogrified? I don't recall the The Looming Tower
particularly well, but I think it was a relatively good and
straight-forwarded work of reporting what could be known about Al
Qaeda in the years leading up to 9/11. I think I was impressed with
what Wright managed to pull together, given the obvious difficulties,
but also felt that the book was surely incomplete, for the same
reasons. I don't recall the book being particularly ideological,
which is a good fit with the traditionally sober -- if not somnulent
-- centrism of the CFR.
Happy to say I missed The Siege.
