If I were to guess (and that's all any of us are doing), I would say
he wrote it under many influences, including LSD.  And I'm sure he
re-wrote and edited all of it many times.  "Most dauntingly layered"
is so correct, and the free-flowing and wildly divergent connections
seem to me at least partly inspired by the lubricants of weed and
acid.  I know that the 4th time I read GR, my then occasional tokes
before reading allowed me to find connections within the text I'd
never seen before...
