Maybe it's "addiction" itself that's the problem? Instead of normal,  
healthy relationships with other people and things, we sometimes  
develop addictions instead.  Recall how Pynchon's work goes after  
"pornography", described as the phony and inauthentic representations  
of life that we humans sometimes prefer over the real thing. The  
perfect sunset on the postcard instead of life on the real Gordita  
Beach, for example.
