Calls to my mind Ursula LeGuin's Left Hand of Darkness. Perhaps it was  
influenced by Spacewoman.

Lawrence, who met Ms. LeGuin at a concert he sponsored in which her  
cellist daughter Elisabeth played a lovely cello suite of Bach, his  
5th, if my memory is correct.
