I also see the Thanatoids as a stand in for a dead culture addicted
to a reality mediated by professional liars/fiction makers/
entertainers. But the Thanatoids are all troubled by the specifics of
their own betrayal.
It is this discrepancy between expectation( maya, tubelight,
Frenesi's blue eyes) and reality (the continuum of Life and Non life
without insurance, now, vineland the good) that is asking for
adjustment.
