The flattened American landscape of minor writers

Irrespective of what we think of McEwan, Updike etc.,
McEwan's essay is a typical example of how the great
American tradition is being defined.

For these traditionalists, great American novel writers
consist of those who are seen to continue the tradition
of "grand realism". This rules out writers like Pynchon
and Gaddis, among others.
