Pynchon/Roth/Bellow/Updike on the 1960s

If Slothrop's a Fool card, he must have fallen off a cliff. 

Pynchon certainly mixes to a heady degree the superstitious and the 
scientific, but I think the physical deterioration of Slothrop is 
explainable -- if at all -- scientifically.  If Pynchon intends his 
disappearance to be explained by reference to his tarot -- he fell off 
a cliff? -- then the novel is weakened one notch in my opinion (need I 
add?).
