VL--IV Chap 6, Frenesi, "like a reflex superstition"

Let me tell you what I know.
A woman who worked at University Press Books in Berkeley knew Pynchon
a bit. She said she was in a car with him as they were going up some
coastal highway towards south San Francisco. TRP called it "San
Narcisco" right then and there [and CoL49 had not yet been published].

Having said that, it seems that the Malibu/Agoura area---close enough
but north of Manhattan Beach---is where I'd locate San Narcisco.
Knowing the terrain and the high, high numbers of the street addresses
[not to mention the proximity to Hollywood] and a couple two-three
other things, that's where I'd place San Narcisco.

My guess is that Frenesi was holed up in the Arizona/New Mexico area,
but for obvious reasons the location is purposely vague.
