Now that I have a moment...

The Chuck Jones/Warner Bros Loony Toons tie in with the low art vs
High Art pile of crap. Unlike Disney's pretensions with Fantasia and
Snow White; Jones, Avery, McKimson etal were doing straight commercial
entertainment but hit the cultural target because their intended
audience consisted of adults.

The original Road Runner, "The Fast and the Furryous", was a one-off
intended to be shown to combat pilots in Viet Nam before feature films
on their movie night. Apparently, it was a huge hit and they demanded
more. The pilots strongly identified with ol' Wile E. Think about it:
high speed pursuit of an elusive target, equipment malfunctions, small
margin for error, general snafus, the fucking ACME Corporation of
America, all resulting in a horrifying high speed plummet from great
height and a feeling of utter futility. This is effective art. This is
great filmmaking.

It's better that it's a cartoon. A serious live-action drama would
have been a morale killer.
