Wayvone, Ralph, Jr. (Vine)
Diebold and Goodwin suggest a play on the popular rock refrain,
"rave on." Wayvone itself does not seem to mean anything. It is not
a common surname, but seems to be used occasionally as a given name.
The sound of the surname is the same as the Chicano slang term juevon
(lazy, or someone who does no work) (Vasquez and Vasquez 49).

p. 10 "Wayvone" = The name may be a play on "rave on," but it's also
been suggested that it might derive from huevon, a Spanish word
meaning egg, but also referring to a testicle -- hence someone with
"big balls." (Pynchon did live in Mexico for a while...) In any case,
Wayvone is also a remittance man, someone who gets paid a small but
regular amount of money to stay out of trouble in some far-away place.
Pynchon seems fond of the type -- there are several in V and Gravity's
Rainbow, and the latter even has a remittance horse (named Snake).

... Is it pronounced "wavy one"?

Do someone credit D&G there, please. Wayv-one, Way-von-e[e], Way-v[ee]-one ...
Here's a potentially interesting note from the archives:

And a rather less useful one, but ...

But foillowing up on something from Hurley, it does indeed seem "to be
used occasionally as a given name,"albeit as a female one...
