Note that L.A. TV in the 60's and 70's had plenty of old—classic—
movies on various local outlets. In the 60's, there was a regular
"Million Dollar Movie" on KHJ-TV channel 9, a RKO owned outlet with
plenty of classic movies in their vaults and nightly on the tube. Ben
Hunter's Movie Matinee on KTTV channel even got parodied by the
Firesign Theater as "Ben Bland's All Day/All Night Matinee."

Remember, as well, how Frenesi's parents were deep into Hollywood as
grips and gaffers—the lowest folks on the Hollywood totem pole,
arguing and yelling at the tube, noting the minutiæ of set
construction and the buried history of Hollywood and Labor.
Also, the seventies was a golden age for repertoire theaters,
particularly in the greater LA area. Not as unlikely as as it might
seem these days.

. . .It seems strange that these two characters are discussing a
movie from 1945 in the 1970s. This was just before cable TV and VCRs
exploded the availability of old movies. Why do you suppose Pynchon
has the two main characters bring this movie up?
