i'm looking forward to reading it as well--the next big book to tackle
for me after finishing 2666. In some weird way, the story parallels
the story of Vassily Grossman's nonfiction writings about WW2 from the
Russian side--at Stalingrad, at scenes of mass murder, in Berlin at
the end.
If one is ambitious take a look at Grossman's Black Book (which he
co-wrote/compiled)--the first descriptions of what the Nazis were up
to on the Eastern Front--very grim reading which strangely is like the
litany of murders as described by Bolano in 2666 in St Theresa. (of
course, there are scenes on the eastern front in that book, too) lots
of correspondences....
