Oedipa’s next move should have been to contact Randolph Driblette, but
how was she to know that he was already dead? Metzger is already
looking past his tryste at Echo Courts to his next—even more pervy—
affair. Meanwhile, Oedipa tears off on a snipe hunt in search for hard
evidence of this “Tristero” system. Oedipa is just as distracted—
misdirected?—as Mucho was as she first leaves Kinneret in the Pines
for San Narcisco. Oedipa was thinking of checking the home scene back
in Kinneret as she drives out of San Narcisco towards Berkeley. By
virtue of missing the off-ramp back to her tower, Oedipa won’t find
out for another 35 pages that her husband Mucho has been drawn into
Dr. Hilarius’ LSD project and the shrink himself appears to have
flipped.

Mrs. Maas is about to step into an abyss.

As Oedipa misses the off-ramp for Kinneret in the Pines, let us note a
few signposts. The fictional town name of Kinneret in the Pines evokes
both Carmel by the Sea & Cambria in the Pines. Between these two real
towns lies both San Simeon, W.H. Hearst’s old haunts & Big Sur, hippie
haven of of Esalen fame and glory. Interestingly, LSD researcher
Stanislav Grof set up shop in Big Sur in 1973.
