tho pynchon never makes anything easy interpretation-wise
there is also a fear some characters have of non-uniformity like
Dixon's fear of unenclosed spaces, Squalidozzi and the Argentines
similar sentiments re: pampas, e.g.
(tho these fears lead to what is certainly those despised orderly patterns, no?)
