As there is at Airbus. My father worked at American Airlines for 15 years
and then as a travel trade-mag journalist, from late DC3 days through the
massification of air travel with the 707 -> 747. He was aware that the
latter had been a "bet the company" effort, damn near bankrupting Boeing
before sales took off and made them very rich.

He used to say "People talk about the early airline swashbucklers like
Howard Hughes and Juan Trippe and Eddie Rickenbacker, and the chances they
took. But those guys had no IDEA how white-knuckle it gets when you have to
commit $5 billion [double or triple that today] years before any chance of a
test flight."
