I think it's well worth noting that TRP's father was a big wheel in  
local Republican politics. If CoL49 is as autobiographical as it think  
it [and Vineland and the upcoming Inherent Vice] is, then Odipa's  
journey away from the father figures of her life parallels Pynchon's  
motion from a life with a not-so-young Republican for a father to a  
life underground.
