I'm with Paul on this.  But... it "comes across the sky," and that is what
makes it a curious sentence, mixing sound and substantiality as it does.

But syntactically (grammatically), the construction is completely
straightforward.  A verbal noun (gerund) preceded by an indefinite
article.
