Karma and the Conservation of Energy

All debts must be paid.

Karma is essentially the spiritual equivalent of the Law of
Conservation of Energy, which is probably why Pynchon is so attracted
to it.

law is that energy cannot be created or destroyed. The only thing that
can happen with energy in an isolated system is that it can change
form, that is to say for instance kinetic energy can become thermal

theory of relativity, the conservation of energy also implies the
conservation of mass in isolated systems (that is, the mass of a
system cannot change, so long as energy is not permitted to enter or
leave the system).”

A spiritual debt indicates a system out of balance.  In VL spiritual
debts are manifest as Thanatoids.  They are lingering indications of
spiritual debt, and they MUST be compensated for them to disappear.
And these debts those of the living.

As Karmic adjusters, DL & Takeshi should be receiving compensation
from the living, although it’s never indicated how or if this in done.
 And as Karmic adjusters, they are essentially psychopomps.

It is telling that DL was converted into a Karmic adjuster through the
scheming of  Wayvone.  He knowingly lets her use the Vibrating Palm on
Takeshi, and then sends Takeshi to join her at the SKA retreat.  So
for some reason, we have a Mafioso orchestrating the creation of a
Karmic adjustment team.  This ain’t no ordinary Mafia.
