on September 4, 1958, the General had officially launched his new constitution,
standing in front of an enormous twelve-foot-high V. 

[for Roman numeral 5, the Fifth Republic that he, De Gaulle had just launched, but
 it was also the old WW2 symbol for victory..."Of course to a new generation the V was
the peace symbol, which stood for nuclear disarmament...and he did not want to know about
the young protestors with signs denouncing his constitution as fascist".]
