Oops - missed one of teh sections I meant to quote, below:
> Whatever my wavelength I really should 'know' better
> John's case rests on two inter-related assumptions:
> 1. He has privileged access to the pure, unadulterated, capital-T Truth; andconsequently
> 2. Anyone who disagrees is wrong or, worse, part of the global Stalinist conspiracy
Bullshit. My case rests on no such assumptions. I merely responded to a 'I wonder where you get your facts form question', and in my answer, as well as saying I'd visited the region, read books and newspapers etc., I said I had a lot of Bosnian friends. I've also made clear that I managed to form my own opinions before I met them. The opinions came first, Bosnian friends came later. Get it?
ANd it's not really abouit 'opinions' anyway, there are hard facts to consider, eg. 8,000 deats at Srebrinice, but you and CHomsky don't give a fuck about the slaughtered Bosnians do you? You're too busy decrying Imperialism, you brave iconoclastic muthas.
Yu can argue about the content and tone of teh Guardian article forever. I see it as amild piss-take aboyt Chomsky's support for a bunch of loopy genocide deniers. Whatever the facts of teh technicality that got the article withdrawn, the main point remains, and is undenied by CHomsky himself: he denies Genocide.
Reasosn? Twofold: one, the US (eventually, belatedly, and not effectively enough by a long chalk) acted against Milosevic, a brutal genocidal Fascist dictator, and this Chomsky sees (as he sees everything) as US Imperialism; two, he has got into bed with Diana JOhnstone, Living Marxism, and numerous other highly dispicable nutjob apolohgists for Serb atrocities, and now he's got their fleas in his little muddled head.
Funny, that's why I thought peple read Chomsky? A fast-track to a simplistic, seemingly rebellious opinion, about matters they can't be bothered properly informing themselves on.
And yeah, I'm a 'Guardian reader', but that paper is a broad church, and often publishes stuff I violently disagreee with. Their craven apology to CHomsky was one example.
