But aren't "real-life" (as opposed to TRP's literary ghosts) also formed by betrayal and disappointment?  The Thanatoids are tough to interpret.  Weed (and maybe Webb Traverse) become Thanatoid/ghosts because they've been personally wronged.  But the Thanatoids, with their tube-watching passivity and modest discontent, are also a reflection of Us.  We the Thanatoids haven't been wronged or betrayed - we're just smug and lazy and too comfortable with the way things are to get off our collective butt.  It's hard to reconcile both versions.
