Korda admitted that he read it in French when it first came out and
was all the rage.

I think I'll steer clear.

I'm presently a little more than half-way through 2666, and liking it.
 The writing is very clean with a very subtle voice.  No theatrics,
but conveying stories with much understate depth.  I think this
translation was done by a very talented person.
