NP - Frank Miller's Charlie Brown

I live in Midwood, Brooklyn, which is definitely in the running for the dubious distinction of being the Least Hip Neighborhood in New York City. The majority of businesses are Orthodox and Hassidic-owned, which means the whole place shuts down tight from Friday sundown to Saturday sundown. The arrival of shabbos is announced by an air-raid type siren (a screaming comes ...). The general religion-induced tedium lets up on Purim, when drunken Hassidic boys hassle my daughter, among others, vomit on the street corners and make themselves generally disagreeable.

There are sizable numbers of Russians, Israelis, Pakistanis, Mexicans and Turks in the neighborhood. There's one VERY FAMOUS Italian pizzeria, Di Fara's, where elderly Dominic De Marco's been making pizza after pizza, day in, day out, for years. It's worth the minimum half-hour wait for a slice or two-hour wait for a pie. There are a couple of lousy kosher pizzerias which, I discovered, are secretly owned by Italians. Aside from that, the only places to congregate are a Dunkin' Donuts (the Turkish men congregate there) and a tiny Chock-Full-O-Nuts (the girls from a local co-ed yeshiva high school crowd the place at their lunch break). The one local book store, Harnick's Happy House of Books and Cards closed a couple of years ago. The store's still vacant.

On the other hand, the neighborhood's served by the Q train, a pretty great train which whisks one to more interesting climes.
