However one feels about Slothrop's fate, one thing seems obvious:
unlike we as readers of fictional narratives have been conditioned
to do, it is not possible to find safety and/or authority in the
protagonist after Slothrop has dispersed.

This makes readers much more responsible than in traditional novels,
responsible for what to make of it all, including Slothrop's fate.
