I like the ideas in Shea and Wilson's _Illuminatus_ of
differently-backed currencies:
flaxscript ("trust not a man who's rich in flax, for his morals may be
sadly lax")
or better yet, hempscript

OTOH, Vineland proposes an even better currency:
"Takeshi calls these things giri chits, sorta karmic IOU's.  Takes a
lot of speed, gets grandiose, wants to base a world currency system on
them, so forth - but if you present one to him, he's got to honor it."
