Well, the Croats are not angels and President Tudjman was a typical
post-communist nationalistic strongman, not much better than
Milosevic, but most of this Spectator and Meza stuff is chauvinistic
rubbish (no offense to Serbian Pynchonites). Your sources simple
forget about the fact that it was the Serbian (officially
"Yugoslavian") regular army that invaded large portions of Croatia
(Slavonia, more exactly) and not vice versa. (And yes, both Serbs and
Croats captured what they could of Bosnia.) Tito was of Croatian
origin, yes (Austro-Hungarian, in fact) but he considered himself a
Yugoslavian first of all, and violently suppressed the Croatian
nationalist opposition. The chequered coat-of-arms was not introduced
by the Ustashi but has been the Croatian emblem since the 16th c., and
used by the Habsburgs as well as the Croatian-Slavonian co-kingdom in
the AtD period. Etc. The Croats still have strong nationalistic and
statist tendencies, but are an easy-going and genial people,
remarkably non-neurotic. (At least in the Adriatic region where my
Serbo-Hungarian friend's house is.)
