  Pamuk is among my favorite writers of fiction right now,  I, not  
exactly presciently, predicted his Nobel on this very list after  
reading My Name is Red.  This may have been colored by a long- 
standing fascination with  the Miniaturists of the Persian Empire.   
Snow is indeed sad but worth it.
