Wow! Thanks so FUCKING MUCH. May I really do as I please? What, even be my dogmatic self? Shit, you are so indulgent and generous......
Sure, I get upset about this topic, that's right, I do. Should I keep that to myself? Yeah, probably. BUt I caught a reference to Chomsky going by, and couldn't resist putting a little hook into it, calling him on what history will judge to be his folly over Bosnia. For doing so, I got attacked, called a typical Guardian reader (been called worse, but still) who reads the Guardian (for shame!) so he can go to nice middle-class dinner parties (nobody told Paul N that 'dinner parties' went out around 1989) and denounce Chomsky, and who, for teh same reasons of limited intellect, can't be bothered to read Pynchon, which begs the question, well, how did I get here?
I dare to suggest, that Thomas Pynchon would take a dim view of the genocide commited, by the Serbs, against the Bosnians. I further suggest, that Pynchon would take quite a dim view of genocide deniers, genocide appeasers, genocide equivocators, genocide 'hmmmm I wonder how these atrocities happened?' -ers, etc.
It seems that you disagree with me, not because of any argument about Bosnia, not even because of any support for Chomsky, but because you don't like the manner in which I have put my points across. Well maybe I have been lacking in the suave emollience department, but I suppose that's partly down to the nature of teh subject at hand, and partly down to my temperament. Don't really see what it's got to do with you, either way.
I don't think informing someone that their ill-informed and wrong-headed opinions make me feel sick and sad and angry is 'mean-spirited', I really don't. It's just the truth. Angry and sad and sick, that's how I feel about finding this attitude on the Pynchon list.
WHo knows, maybe it's time for me to take one of my periodic sabbaticals from this list, and leave it to the non-dogmatic, civility loving, moral equivocators to enjoy in peace?
