We know from GR that Pynchon sees a death wish buried in the fascist  
instinct. Hitler invading Russia, Vond going beyond even the nasty  
the boundaries of the Reagan domestic agenda, and perhaps beyond the  
limits of Karmic adjustment or any redemptive movement. Also he seems  
to expect that those he pursues have learned nothing, don't have the  
resources to resist him or take evasive measures. The fascist thinks  
he can endlessly divide and conquer but encounters a network of  
resistance the 2nd time around. This isn't all about the failures of  
the left and the counterculture movement there is also growth here, a  
reconnection to family, friendship, place, roots. Meanwhile Vond is  
more and more alone.
