Hello Dave!
We are watching an old TV series from 1964 on DVD, and there is a
German Psychiatrist with eerie coincidences to Dr Hilarius, Oedipa's
"shrink or psychotherapist," who "sounded like Pierce doing a Gestapo
officer."
The Show is Burke's Law, Episode 19: WHO KILLED APRIL? which aired
originally on January 31, 1964, with Gene Barry as Amos Burke, a
millionaire LA Detective solving crimes in a Rolls Royce.
The good German doctor in the show is the minor star of stage and
screen Hans Conried, and the dialogue for that particular scene could
easily fit right into Lot 49.
The show was a major hit in the months following the JFK
assassination, holding a prominent Friday night spot, the shows for
the season all moved back a week after being cancelled the Friday
night of Nov 22, 1963.
I’ve only seen the episode once, and there is nothing overt that
positively identifies this with LOT 49, no smoking gun moment, only a
strong intuition of Pynchon watching this show while creating LOT 49.
I was just wondering if you knew if anyone has ever commented on this?
