Hard to believe otherwise, although I think I recall him -- Or Kubrick -- saying that it was not.

Only one problem. We precocious kids figured out that if you took the letters of the alphabet immediately following those in H-A-L, you came up w/ IBM, which I am sure was intentional on Arthur C. Clark's part.





This reminds me, in the dubbed French release of 2001 : L'Odyssée de
l'espace, HAL 9000 is renamed CARL, and speaks with the voice of
Jean-Louis Trintignant ...
