Well, Hollander's work is very impressive (apart from the Bartok
reference which, as I happen to know, misses the point). Meanwhile,
imho much Pynchon and especially COL 49 is not about a single
(fictional) universe with a single hidden system of meanings (one true
signified for each signifier), which one must find, but about binary
choices between alternative possible worlds. It's the railroad/points
metaphor: if Oedipa chose to go along one line, there might be no end
to it. So in the end she stops at the points.
