I knew it was Dutch. Was still trying to work out a connection
between the names of Oedipa Maas and Peter Pinguid as Joe suggested a
few days ago. (Royal Dutch Shell?)
Anyway, it was news to me. also, had to look up the derivation,
because I always thought it had to do with a loop when you are tying a
knot. But apparently it's like you said, a small hole in a wall
through which shots may be fired. Or, it'd be good for looking out
or in, which in some circles is also considered threatening ("the male
gaze") (confirmed in popular culture by Paul's grandfather in _A Hard
Day's Night_: "when did you last embarrass a Sheila with your cool
appraising stare?")
