"The Furies" opening for Spotted Dick at FFO - 3 basses and no lead
guitar
I have no idea - the bass was very, very popular but no lead?
Nevertheless, watch the White Rabbit clip (see below) and you'll see
Jack Casady who played bass for Jefferson Airplane (see below) - it
fits.

Pillow.

(On Smothers Brothers - I probably saw that show - very nice.)

What was that prior reference to "Slick" again? Donavan "Quite
right, Slick," or "Grace Slick." eh .... ?

I have no idea when organic ice cream became popular in LA. I
certainly didn't hear about it. This may be something that TPR knew
about from his own experience.

Bambi: "We had you figured for a Herb Alpert person." Why does she
say that? Is Doc a dud - uncool? Yes, a bit. *OR* - was Herb
Albert cool? - Not that I remember, although some of his tunes
certainly were. Doc's older than the girls for sure but ...
Pynchon was 33 in 1970 - maybe he liked Herb Alpert.
"This Guy's in Love with You" by Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass

(1970)
"Alpert originally sang "This Guy's in Love with You" on a 1968
television special. In response to numerous viewer telephone calls,
the song was released as a single and reached #1 on the U.S. Billboard
Hot 100 in June of that year, remaining in the top position for four
weeks. It was not only Alpert's first #1 record, but it was also the
first #1 record for his A&M record label. The song also spent an
impressive ten weeks at #1 on the adult contemporary chart, which at
the time was referred to as the "Easy Listening" chart. For the
single's B-side, Alpert chose "A Quiet Tear," an album track from his
first album in 1962, The Lonely Bull."

Doc: "... everything copacetic?" - an interesting word - it means
fine or excellent. See
http://www.worldwidewords.org/weirdwords/ww-cop1.htm
for a good discussion of the term.

Bambi: "Shiny Mac McNutley" - a member of Spotted Dick - a member
of King Crimson? (I doubt it - more likely a TPR invention.)

Jade's toilet paper / "letter of intent" joke underscores the idea
that Jade and Bambi may simply just be really mean, sarcastic little
wonders who think very highly of themselves.

Patchouli - oh lord love a duck if I never smell that again it might
be too soon. I smelled just a bit too much of it back then - I liked
it - I really, really did - but then somehow it got overdone.
Recent studies show it may be an effective insect deterrent. (heh)

And in a very small case of synchronicity, I came across the word
patchouli in Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard the other morning . (Gaev
says it smells of patchouli in the house - he probably doesn't like it.)
