"Desafinado" by Stan Getz & Astrud Gilberto, with Charlie Byrd
a bossa nova tune - made popular in 1962 by Stan Getz, Herb Alpert,
Antonio Carlos Jobim, etc.

And the scene becomes even more "prior era" as a "curious sort of
hippie chick" in a "Little Black Dress" from the 1950s, with "hair
short ... tightly permed" and interestingly high stiletto heels
settles in at the piano.

The "little black dress" was a standard item of women's wear in the
1950s early '60s. It was a somewhat plain, could be sexy or
funereal, somewhat form fitted, solid black cocktail type dress,
maybe taffeta material (slick, shiny), a bit short usually, but
definitely not a mini. They've made a come-back of sorts, I think.

There were lots of styles but I was a bit young for this sort of
thing. My mom had one or two. I kind of looked forward to having one
- I think I did at some point in my life (???) -

The heels:

The singer sings
"It Never Entered My Mind" by Rodgers & Hart (show tune from the
musical Higher and Higher)

I don't care if there's powder on my nose.
I don't care if my hairdo is in place.
I've lost the very meaning of repose.
I never put a mudpack onmy face.
Oh, who'd have thought that I'd walk in the daze now?
I never go to shows at night, but just to matinees now.
I see the show and home I go.
Once I laughed when I heard you saying
that I'd be playing solitaire, uneasy in my easy chair.
It never entered my mind.
Once you told me I was mistaken,
that I'd awaken with the sun and order orange juice for one.
It never entered my mind.
You have what I lack myself
and now I even have to scratch my back myself.
Once you warned me that if you scorned me
I'd sing the maiden's prayer again
and wish that you where there again to get into my hair again.
It never entered my mind.

The lyrics affect Doc - it's about being surprised when someone dumps
you and the loneliness afterwards and Doc is touched. Then Coy shows
up "like a parrot in a cartoon..." (Pynchon likes parrots and
pigs.) Also affected by the song, deeply regreting something he's
done.

ME: At times, Coy seems to be a part of the past (living in the past
in a couple ways) and that's why he's "dead" (a ghost in Robin's
words, a zombie, perhaps) at the Boards' house. But he's alive at
the Latin bossa nova place; that's his spiritual time and place.
He's got to keep the "real" him down and out of sight when he's with
the Boards. They're all zombies at the Boards house - not of the
past but not living in the day.

Doc confronts Coy with his knowledge of the television clip he saw
where Coy was "at a rally for Nixon."
