Why does Doc take the back route up to Ojai by way of Burbank and Santa Paula?

Most likely, paranoia.  Shasta was afraid she was being watched, now Doc’s afraid.  On the way back, he takes the more direct route on 101 through Thousand Oaks.

My husband spent his high school years in the San Fernando Valley and said there was always horrible traffic on 101 from Thousand Oaks to Ventura.  He and his girlfriend drove up to Ojai once from the valley and took the same route Doc did (it was more direct from Granada Hills, their starting point).  This back route was less developed, very flat, with farmland and vineyards.  The direct route through Thousand Oaks was heavily developed with higher priced housing developments, so maybe Doc's making a statement about real estate developers by avoiding it?  Or maybe this is just a variation of "taking the surface streets," which he seems to do a lot.
