Page 175 presents the funny dialog of page 174 continued. The
question is, from Doc's point of view: is it safe to take a ride with
Japonica? But Denis seems as stoned as usual, and Blatnoyd has just
had cocaine, as well as Doc.
- "eyeball diagnostic" is a way to see if Japonica is on hash, or
acid, or speed. But Japonica seems much better than the three other.
- "a ten-year-old Mercedes sedan": this car (model-name W128) is a
luxury car, and according to Wikipedia, it was sold at the same price
as the Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz, which is Shasta's car in the novel
(5). These girls have wonderful cars!
- why "Wolfgang"? It was the name of a chimpanzee in Gravity's
Rainbow, on board Frau Gnahb's ship (another kinky moment, p. 496, or
p. 505 in my Penguin Great Books ed.)
- I don't know what is a #66 market bag. I may refer to a shop's
name, an old chain-store firm?
- "paranoid" Here is the rhyme that Joseph Tracy suggested on Sunday.
But Japonica is concentrated on her driving, and she must have some
talent "maneuvering them smoothly up Sunset through the late rush-
hour traffic."
